The tech behemoth said in a statement that it is planning to "invest more than $500bn" to support a wide range of initiatives that focus on AI, silicon engineering and skills development across the country.

“We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we’re proud to build on our long-standing US investments with this $500bn commitment to our country’s future,” said chief executive Tim Cook.

"We’re thrilled to expand our support for American manufacturing. And we’ll keep working with people and companies across this country to help write an extraordinary new chapter in the history of American innovation.”

The plans include a new advanced manufacturing facility in Houston to produce servers that support Apple Intelligence; a doubling of its US Advanced Manufacturing Fund, which was created in 2017 to support innovation and high-skilled manufacturing jobs); the creation of an academy in Michigan to train new workers; and the creation of a new factory in Texas.

Teams and facilities will expand in Michigan, Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, Iowa, Oregon, North Carolina, and Washington, the company said.

Apple, which said it already supports more than 2.9m jobs across the country through direct employment, supplier partnerships and third-party developers, will employ a further 20,000 people as part of the investments – primarily in R&D, silicon engineering, software development, and AI and machine learning.
