As of 1240 GMT, Dow Jones futures were down 0.15%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures had the indices opening 0.14% and 0.05% weaker, respectively.
The Dow closed 649.67 points lower on Monday after Trump confirmed that his new 25% duties on Canada and Mexico would go ahead, adding that there was "no room left" for the two nations to negotiate.
China retaliated with additional tariffs of up to 15% on US goods, while Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said it would place a 25% import levy on its neighbour to the south.
No major corporate earnings or data points were slated for release on Tuesday but traders will look ahead to speeches from Federal Reserve bankers Tom Barkin and John Williams after the close.
