US close: S&P 500 chalks up another fresh record close

Major indices delivered a mixed performance on Tuesday as traders digested another batch of quarterly earnings reports from some of the country's biggest companies.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.40% at 44,502.44, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.06% to 6,309.62, and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.39% weaker at 20,892.68.

The Dow closed 179.37 points higher on Tuesday, easily reversing losses recorded in the previous session, while the S&P 500 eked out yet another record close.

Corporate earnings took centre stage again on Tuesday, with quarterly earnings from Coca-Cola coming in ahead of estimates as strong demand in Europe offset weakness elsewhere, and Philip Morris reporting strong sales of its Zyn Pouches, leading it to hike FY profit guidance.

Elsewhere, Lockheed Martin posted Q2 sales that fell short of Wall Street expectations, General Motors said electric vehicle sales had more than doubled in Q2 but also warned that tariff costs would weigh on profits, and Halliburton Q2 profits fell on the back of a 'softer market'.

Trade talks also drew an amount of investor attention, with treasury secretary Scott Bessent saying the White House would most likely extend a deadline to reach a deal with China, with whom he plans to meet with in Stockholm next week.

Donald Trump also said the US has "concluded" a trade deal with the Philippines, which includes a 19% tariff on imported goods. The Philippines is yet to confirm the deal.

On the macro front, the Richmond Federal Reserve's manufacturing index sank 12 points month-on-month to -20 in July, the lowest reading in ten months and in stark contrast to expectations of an improvement to -2.
