As of 1445 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.18% at 44,774.46, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.15% to 6,373.03, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.01% softer at 21,056.04.

The Dow opened 80.55 points higher on Friday, reclaiming some of yesterday's losses.

Despite Thursday's losses, the blue-chip Dow Jones was still on track to wrap up the week in the green, as were the other two major indices, driven by solid earnings from several big-name firms and positive trade headlines.

On the macro front, US durable goods orders fell 9.3% month-on-month to $311.84bn in June, according to the Census Bureau, taking a bite out of May's upwardly revised 16.5% jump. The biggest declines were seen in orders for transport equipment, down 22.4% year-on-year, and capital goods, which were down 22.2%.

In the corporate space, chipmaker Intel traded slightly higher after posting Q2 revenues that topped analysts' estimates, while Paramount shares were also in the green after the Federal Communications Commission gave its $8.0bn merger with Skydance Media the go-ahead.
